CSS: Positioning

CSS provides a great deal of flexibility in how elements can be rendered visually. One of the key features of CSS is positioning, the ability to influence where an element is displayed on the page.

With the position rule, we can take a block out of the layout and position it as we see fit. The basic values of the position property are as follows:

  • relative (relative positioning). Allows you to change the position of an element relative to where it was before the property was applied. In this case, the place on the page that the block occupied before will remain. In other words, other blocks will not go where the block was before the rule was applied.
  • absolute (absolute positioning). "Takes the block out of HTML and relocates it to the upper-left corner of the page (or parent element if it has a position property set to fixed, absolute, relative, or sticky). Unlike relative, the place where the absolute block was located will be removed, and other blocks can take that place.
  • fixed. Like absolute, this rule will extract the block from the HTML markup and place it in the upper left corner. The difference from absolute positioning is that the block will follow the page and will always be within the user's view. This is useful for creating menus that need to follow the user.

To manage the positioning, four CSS rules are used: top, right, left and bottom, whose values are the coordinates (in pixels, for example) where the block will be located.

Create a div with the class set to relative-position and set the relative positioning itself. Set the top value to 100 pixels and the right value to 50 pixels. Try different values to see how the block will move. Write the styles in the style tag.

The exercise doesn't pass checking. What to do? 😶

If you've reached a deadlock it's time to ask your question in the «Discussions». How ask a question correctly:

  • Be sure to attach the test output, without it it's almost impossible to figure out what went wrong, even if you show your code. It's complicated for developers to execute code in their heads, but having a mistake before their eyes most probably will be helpful.
In my environment the code works, but not here 🤨

Tests are designed so that they test the solution in different ways and against different data. Often the solution works with one kind of input data but doesn't work with others. Check the «Tests» tab to figure this out, you can find hints at the error output.

My code is different from the teacher's one 🤔

It's fine. 🙆 One task in programming can be solved in many different ways. If your code passed all tests, it complies with the task conditions.

In some rare cases, the solution may be adjusted to the tests, but this can be seen immediately.

I've read the lessons but nothing is clear 🙄
